The Crew

August 2016 Update

CAPTAIN: Justin Holvik

Justin holds the highest grade Norwegian Master Mariner certificate. He has spent his entire life at sea; in the Norwegian navy, long line fishing with his family North of the Arctic Circle and then on charter yachts both power and sail. The last command he had was a gaff cutter from 1908 which he sailed for two years including around The Horn and to the South Pacific. Justin has sailed with John on several yachts including the 3-masted schooner Shenandoah where Romy, Germania Nova's Engineer also worked. During his time away from the sea he spends his time with his family who lives near Barcelona and goes skiing with them in Norway and the Pyrenees.

A working life spent at sea and mostly in sailing vessels of all types, from square rig to fore and aft rigged schooners, cutters and many others. A graduate of the time before electronic navigation when we were often uncertain where you were and ever sense in your body was used to fix your position. When not at sea he lives in the mountains in the South West of Mallorca with his family on a farm with some animals and lots of olive trees.

Kate was born and raised in Nottinghamshire, England and developed a love for the ocean from her scuba diving parents. Following in their footsteps and becoming a SCUBA instructor she quickly realized that a life at sea would suit her. Her life's ambition is to visit every country in the world and has chosen a career which enables her to fulfil this. Kate's aim is to ensure that the guests have a wonderful time and to share in the peace and tranquillity that sailing on Germania Nova brings. Kate's interests include underwater photography, videography, running, yoga, reading, cuisine and expanding her knowledge of the world. She would love the chance to dive the Titanic, search for shipwrecks and treasure and participate in underwater archeology.

CHEF: James Nightingale

James worked as a Head chef & General Manager for the Fine Dining restaurant The "HH" in Devon. He left that position to pursue his career on board super yachts, the plan is to save enough money to buy and renovate houses in England & use his pre-cooking background job as a carpenter to get them "ship shape" and rented out and hopefully bring an early retirement for him and his girlfriend. (One can but hope & dream!). James endeavour's to provide culinary perfection in line with the classic grace of Germania Nova.

SECOND STEWARDESS: Jessica Wollacott

STEWARDESS: Heather Rae Stephane

First Officer: Benjamin Tchamy

Ben was raised by the sea in Sidmouth, Devon, UK. He has always had a passion for classic yachts and the flawless carpentry involved in them. The biggest influence on Ben were the 6 years that he spent on the 2-masted schooners Mariette and Eleonora F, this is where he learnt all his large gaff sailing skills. The last 2 years have been spent building modern classics in the UK.

BOSUN: Julio Crespo

Julio was born and raised in Palma de Mallorca, he has worked on the famous 3-masted staysail schooner Creole for 8 years and during this time he extensively raced on Avel, a small gaff cutter as well. During his holidays he tries to sail as much as possible.

DECKHAND: Ludolph Smidth

DECKHAND: Olle Ljundahl

Growing up Olle sailed around the world with his family which made him an adult with an open mind and a hunger for adventure on the high seas. Fate led him to his first encounter with Germania Nova sailing into Admiralty Bay, Bequia in the West Indies. Inspired by her Beauty, the captain and his crew, Olle joined Germania Nova the following summer. Much of his previous experience comes from smaller yachts sailing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Bethany is our youngest crew member and she is from North Wales but for the last 8 years she has been living, travelling and home schooling on her families yacht. They spent 3 years in the Mediterranean and a year in the Canary Islands before sailing south to Gambia and exploring her massive river. In her spare time she has entered in game fishing tournaments and regattas. She loves dinghy sailing, scuba diving.
Bethany fell in love with Germania Nova when she saw her in Trinidad in 2015. Since then she has kept in touch with the Captains and was delighted when they offered her the position as junior deckhand.

ENGINEER: Romy Penaflorida

Romy is another that has spent a life at sea. He worked for eighteen years as the Chief Engineer on the 3-masted gaff schooner Shenandoah of Sark. He has rounded the world four times and been around Cape Horn three times. If something is broken and Romy cannot fix it then it cannot be fixed. The only time that Romy has been seen looking worried was when the fuel froze in the fuel lines of Shenandoah after being storm bound up a fjord in South Georgia for a couple of days.

DECK ENGINEER: Max Samuel Whetter

Max was born and raised in Palma de Mallorca and his family are now living on a 50ft catamaran sailing through the Pacific. He has already completed 3 Atlantic crossing under sail and has worked on an 80ft Swan as the Mate/Engineer. The main passion in Max's life is sailing and soaking up the atmosphere of the high seas.
